We are a member of the General Federation of Women's
Clubs n North Carolina. The General Federation consists of
6,500 clubs all over the world. We are a community-based
club dedicated
to community
service.
The GFWC was organized
in 1890 by Jane
Cunningham Croly, an accomplished newspaper woman. In 1868
she founded the Sorosis Club in
New York City. It was a club for
women only and became the "Mother Club"
of the GFWC. Then,
in 1890 she organized the General Federation
of Women's Clubs (GFWC).
The Federation was chartered by the U.S. Congress
in 1901
and is headquartered in Washington, D.C. The state organization,
GFWC-NC, is headquartered in Raleigh, NC and was founded in
1902. We were 100 years old last year and now there are almost
200 clubs in this state with approximately 7,131 members.
The Cary Woman's Club was organized and
received it's charter
January 3, 1963. At that time there were only 14 members and
we met in members homes. Today we have approximately seventy
members and meet in at the Herb Young Community Center located
behind City Hall off Academy Street in downtown Cary.
The Cary Woman's Club is proud of it's many achievements and
