Club History

janeIn 1868, Jane Cunningham Croly, an accomplished newspaper
woman, founded the Sorosis Club in New York city. It was a
club for women only. In 1890 when she organized the General
Federation of Women's Clubs (GFWC), the Sorosis Club became
the "Mother Club".

The Federation was chartered by the U.S. Congress in 1901 and is headquartered in Washington, D.C. The state organization, GFWC-NC, is headquartered in Raleigh, NC and was founded in 1902. We were 100 years old in 2002, and have clubs thoughout the U.S. and in 20 countries outside the United States.

The Cary Woman's Club was organized and received it's charter January 3, 1963. At that time there were only 14 members and we met in members' homes. Today we have approximately sixty members and meet at the Herb Young Community Center located behind City Hall off Academy Street in downtown Cary.

The Cary Club consists of the following Departments: Arts, Conservation, Education, International, Home Life and Public Affairs. The Cary Woman's Club is proud of it's many achievements and it's contributions to our community such as:
